A brief note about this portfolio

Hello. I've used this part of my blog to show the work that I did whilst studying graphic communications at CSAD. I graduated nearly a year ago, with 1st Class Honours, so I'm obviously still really proud of the work that I did there and I want to show it.

But since I've graduated, I feel my work and focus at Public Zone has changed dramatically. So I hope you won't feel that the work shown here is still the kind of work I'm doing now. 

As you'll probably know yourself, the pace and standard of work in a professional environment is markedly different to the one I'd got used to in education, and that's also the reason that I haven't yet been able to update my portfolio here. I hope to soon.

Design: The Big Idea - Authority

A final-year project at CSAD, students were asked to explore 'the big idea' behind a given word. Questioning 'authority', I produced three posters in a 19th century letterpress style, but using text from the signage of today. Viewers were invited to consider the credibility and value of the messages presented when they were shown out of their usual context.

Design: The Mabinogion

Responding to the ffres awards brief, I developed a book cover design that could be deployed across a new range of Seren books re-imagining The Mabinogion; medieval Welsh folk stories. The aesthetic is rooted in the dramatic natural environment in Wales, given a modern spin through contemporary typography and layout.

Strategy: Step Up!

A response to an open 'student set' brief, I explored how young people might be encouraged to engage with their local communities. Conceived the brand name, logo, promotional strategy and web concept.

Digital: Together.com

A brief set by the YCN to promote 'easy ways to fight climate change' and encourage young people to visit together.com. The 'established' way to win this space invaders style game actually causes the player to lose. The game could be run as a facebook application or as a standalone website with banner advertising on the major social networking sites.

Brand identity: Moseley White

Working to a brief set by Staziker Jones, I created a variable logo and stationery range for Moseley White, a fictional accountancy firm with a client base in the entertainment and sporting industries.

Copywriting & design: Create Not Hate

Create Not Hate set this brief through the D&AD student awards for a 'copy based print advert' targeted at creative professionals aged 25 and over. I produced three outcomes encouraging nostalgia for my target audience's own childhood.

The body copy reads:

"Today, some young people are scared to even leave their postcode, in case they run into a rival gang. Their futures are shaped by fear - fear of saying the wrong thing, fear of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes, carrying a knife can seem like the only option.

That’s why Create Not Hate works with young people in the worst affected areas to help them realise their potential through creative projects, and we need your help. Try to picture yourself as a young person growing up now. Would a younger you even know that your job, your passion, even existed?

It only takes a few hours of your time to help these young people inspire themselves out of the fear that traps them, to empower them to Create Not Hate.
